The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking a detail oriented and collaborative accounting professional to join its Finance division as an Accountant. Reporting to the Accounting Principal, this role supports CMAP’s financial integrity through accurate, timely, and compliant accounting operations. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting foundation, excellent attention to detail, and an interest in growing technical skills within a mission-driven public sector organization.
Job Responsibilities
- Processes accounts receivable and cash receipts, prepares bank deposits, and ensures accurate recording of financial transactions.
- Prepares and posts journal entries and supports month end close activities in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Monitors project and grant activity to ensure compliance, appropriate billing, and accurate financial reporting.
- Performs reconciliations for assigned accounts and investigates variances; prepares adjusting entries as needed.
- Supports financial transparency and compliance by collaborating with departments across CMAP and engaging with external partners.
- Assists with maintaining financial data within CMAP’s enterprise resource planning system, Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365), and participates in continuous improvement efforts.
- Contributes to process optimization, internal control enhancements, and improvements to ERP functionality.
About CMAP
CMAP serves 284 municipalities and seven counties across Northeastern Illinois as the region’s comprehensive planning organization and designated Metropolitan Planning Organization. The agency manages a diverse portfolio of projects funded by multiple sources and stakeholders, supporting long term regional planning and investment.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of directly applicable accounting experience.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) is strongly preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new systems, improve processes, and collaborate across teams.
Hiring Range: $69,769.35 – $85,467.39.
CMAP employees work a reduced work week of 37.5 hours and a flexible hybrid work schedule, with in-office work at CMAP’s Old Post Office location, 433 West Van Buren Street in Chicago, IL.
