Overview

The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing and overseeing key accounting functions, supporting the monthly and year-end financial close process, preparing financial reports and analyses, and maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the organization’s financial records.

The position also serves as the subject matter expert for payroll administration, managing the organization’s semi-monthly payroll process and ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payment of approximately 260 full- and part-time employees.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities. This position requires a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion when handling financial and employee information.

The Role

  • Accounting
  • Perform and oversee key accounting functions, including:
  • Month-end and year-end closing processes
  • General ledger maintenance and journal entries
  • Balance sheet reconciliations and account analyses
  • Revenue and expenditure variance analysis
  • Fixed asset and capital grant activity
  • Interfund transactions and reconciliations
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Family Centers’s established policies and procedures.
  • Identify discrepancies or unusual activity and investigate and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Prepare financial reports and statements for management and the Board of Directors.
  • Assist with the annual financial audit by preparing schedules, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and responding to auditor requests.
  • Establish, maintain, and follow appropriate accounting methods, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Payroll

  • Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll using ADP Workforce Now, from time and attendance input through final payroll reconciliation.
  • Calculate and process special payments, including retroactive pay, final pay, vacation payouts, incentive payments, and other special compensation.
  • Develop a system to reconcile payroll and payroll-related accounts and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Partner with Human Resources Manager to review and prepare annual payroll reporting and ensure payroll records are accurate and complete.
  • Respond to employee questions regarding payroll, direct deposits, pay statements, and other payroll-related matters.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records in accordance with organizational policies and applicable requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance Requirements and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Strong understanding of payroll processing and payroll accounting.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when handling financial and payroll data.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships at multiple levels of the organization and be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Finance, Human Resources, and other departments.
  • High level of professionalism, confidentiality, discretion, and sound judgment.
  • Customer-focused approach when responding to employee and internal department inquiries.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, accounting and payroll systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process improvements and contribute to efficient and effective financial and payroll operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting and payroll experience.
  • Working knowledge of payroll taxes, payroll reporting requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Previous experience with ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.

Compensation

$85,000 - 90,000 annually
