About the Role

The Staff Accountant supports the accurate, timely, and consistent accounting and financial reporting of Triple C and its housing portfolio.  Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Staff Accountant is responsible for assigned general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, period-end close activities, and audit support across multiple properties, programs, and affiliated entities. The position works collaboratively with Finance, Asset Management, Property Management/Housing Operations, and other departments to ensure financial information is accurate, properly supported, and available to support organizational decision-making.  The Staff Accountant also contributes to strong internal controls, efficient accounting processes, and continuous improvement within the Finance Department.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely general ledger accounting records for assigned properties, programs, and affiliated entities.
  • Prepare and post recurring and adjusting journal entries, including operating expenses, administrative and management fees, prepaid expenses, intercompany activity, accruals, and other assigned transactions.
  • Prepare monthly bank, balance sheet, and other account reconciliations; research discrepancies and outstanding items and make or recommend appropriate corrections.
  • Review general ledger activity to identify unusual, incomplete, or incorrectly recorded transactions and ensure activity is recorded to the appropriate account, property, program, entity, and accounting period.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities and complete assigned accounting responsibilities in accordance with established Finance Department deadlines.
  • Prepare property- and entity-level financial reports, schedules, and supporting analyses for review by the VP of Finance and other appropriate leadership.
  • Maintain accurate supporting schedules and documentation for balance sheet accounts, accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and other significant accounting activity.
  • Support accounting and reporting requirements associated with Triple C’s HUD, NJHMFA, DCA, and other government-funded housing and programs.
  • Support annual financial, program, and other audits by preparing requested schedules, reconciliations, account analyses, and supporting documentation and assisting with auditor inquiries.
  • Work collaboratively with Asset Management and Property Management/Housing Operations to research financial discrepancies, improve property-level financial information, and support accurate portfolio reporting.
  • Follow established accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and documentation of accounting processes and participate in Finance Department process and systems improvements.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of financial, employee, tenant, and organizational information.
  • Support other Finance Department responsibilities, projects, and organizational initiatives as assigned.

What does Success Looks Like

Success in this role means Triple C’s accounting records for assigned properties, programs, and entities are accurate, current, well-supported, and available when needed for management decision-making, reporting, and audit purposes.  The Staff Accountant consistently meets established close and reconciliation deadlines, proactively identifies and resolves discrepancies, and maintains organized supporting documentation.

The Staff Accountant develops a strong understanding of Triple C’s housing portfolio and funding structures and works effectively with Finance, Asset Management, and operational teams to improve the quality and reliability of property-level financial information.  The position contributes to an efficient Finance Department by strengthening accounting processes, supporting internal controls, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to identify and research discrepancies and unusual financial activity.
  • Ability to organize and manage accounting responsibilities across multiple properties, programs, or cost centers while meeting recurring deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to effectively use accounting and financial systems.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Experience with nonprofit, affordable housing, supportive housing, property, or real estate accounting.
  • Experience with HUD, NJHMFA, DCA, or other government-funded programs.
  • Experience preparing property- or entity-level financial reports and supporting schedules.
  • Experience supporting financial, governmental, or program audits.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or comparable accounting/ERP systems.
  • Familiarity with fixed assets, capital expenditures, intercompany accounting, or multi-entity accounting.

Physical Requirements

  • Use of standard office equipment (telephone, fax, computer, copier, etc.).
  • When applicable to the position, ability to perform moderate physical effort to assist tenants in their home environment during move-ins, move-outs, or transfers between agency housing units.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, using defensive driving techniques.
  • Some lifting may be required, in addition to walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and driving.
