The Tax Accountant supports the Company's tax compliance, reporting, and planning activities across a multi-state, multi-entity pharmacy organization. This role is responsible for state and local tax compliance, including sales and use tax, business personal property tax, commercial activity tax (CAT), gross receipts taxes, business licenses, and related filings. The position also provides support for federal and state income tax compliance, tax planning initiatives, audits, acquisitions, and strategic projects while helping strengthen tax processes, internal controls, and documentation. Primary Responsibilities • Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns, business personal property tax filings, CAT, gross receipts taxes, business licenses, and other state and local tax filings. • Assist with federal and state income tax compliance by preparing workpapers, schedules, and supporting documentation. Recognize, anticipate, and resolve tax issues while providing practical recommendations to management. • Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts, including sales tax accruals, accounts payable transactions, fixed assets, and exempt sales. • Strengthen tax processes, internal controls, compliance calendars, and documentation to support a growing multi-entity organization. Support tax-planning initiatives and identify opportunities for process improvements, risk reduction, and tax savings. • Support acquisitions, entity formations, restructurings, and other business initiatives with tax implications. • Respond to tax notices, assist with audits and regulatory inquiries, and maintain organized, audit-ready records. Maintain exemption certificate records and ensure proper documentation exists for all exempt customers. • Research state and local tax laws, legislative changes, and emerging tax issues impacting pharmacy operations. Lead or support state and local tax audits and coordinate with external advisors and taxing authorities. • Assist in maintaining tax registrations and compliance requirements across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions. Initiate and participate in tax-related projects and cross-functional business initiatives. • Serve as a tax resource and liaison to accounting, finance, and operational teams by providing training, guidance, and mentorship and partnering with external tax preparers on income tax returns and payroll findings. • Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Key Skills • Strong leadership, training, mentoring, verbal, written, and presentation skills. • Excellent analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving abilities. • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with ERP and tax compliance systems. • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. • Excellent communication, written and verbal, across all levels of the organization. • High attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management abilities. Education/Experience Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field. • CPA license, CPA candidate, CMI certification, or EA certification. • Minimum of three years of tax, accounting, or public accounting experience, preferably in a multi-state environment. • Experience with sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and other state and local tax compliance requirements. • Healthcare, pharmacy, retail, or multi-location industry experience preferred.
