This position is located within the Fixed Asset section of the Fiscal Division of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism. The Accountant I is responsible for the accurate accounting and maintenance of the agency’s fixed assets throughout the asset lifecycle. This position ensures asset records are complete, accurate, properly classified, adequately supported by documentation, and maintained in accordance with applicable accounting requirements, internal fiscal policies, and Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) guidelines. The Accountant I applies established fiscal policies and guidelines to evaluate transactions, determine appropriate accounting treatment, and maintain reliable and auditable asset information. A significant responsibility of the position is assisting with the planning, coordination, and completion of the agency’s annual asset inventory. This includes researching and resolving discrepancies, validating asset information, coordinating with appropriate personnel, and maintaining complete supporting documentation.

The Accountant I is responsible for performing professional accounting and financial tasks within a department. This position involves processing financial transactions, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with state financial regulations and policies. The Accountant I will work closely with other financial staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in the agency’s financial operations.Primary Responsibilities

Prepare and maintain financial records, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all transactions.

Assist in the preparation of financial reports, budgets, and forecasts in accordance with state regulations and policies.

Reconcile accounts, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved in a timely manner.

Prepare journal entries and ensure all entries are properly documented and in compliance with state accounting standards.

Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.Knowledge and Skills

Familiarity with governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting processes.

Proficient in accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel) and standard office applications.

Skilled in preparing and presenting financial statements, budgets, and reports.

Understanding of state and federal financial regulations and accounting standards.Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series.
