The position prepares and files monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns; performs reconciliations, journal entries, adjustments, and reporting; reviews invoices and tax certificates; maintains resale certificates; monitors changing tax laws and economic nexus thresholds; and updates multistate tax rates and system codes.

Summary

The accountant specializing in sales and property tax is responsible for the preparation, entry, maintenance, and review tax returns, licensing, certifications, and fixed assets. This a heavy deadline driven position that requires attention to detail.

Sales and Use Tax

The position prepares and files monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns; performs reconciliations, journal entries, adjustments, and reporting; reviews invoices and tax certificates; maintains resale certificates; monitors changing tax laws and economic nexus thresholds; and updates multistate tax rates and system codes.

Ensures tax compliance for all existing states and setting up new ones.

Provides training, education materials, matrixes, and customer service to other departments.

Property Tax

Manage the annual property tax process by gathering and reviewing asset information, coordinating with departments to ensure accurate reporting, preparing and filing property tax returns by required deadlines, and facilitating timely payment of all tax obligations.

Conduct monthly reviews of purchase activity to identify personal property additions and maintain compliance with reporting requirements.

Business Licenses

Manage business license compliance by filing and renewing licenses in a timely manner, monitoring city, county, and state licensing requirements and deadlines, collecting and validating data needed for license filings, and maintaining accurate licensing records.

Coordinate the activation and deactivation of licenses as business operations change and ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements.

Unclaimed Property

Assist in the collection and review of unclaimed property data, prepare and submit annual unclaimed property filings in accordance with state requirements, and maintain accurate records and supporting documentation to ensure compliance and audit readiness.

General Ledger and Audit Support

Prepare journal entries and monthly general ledger account reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records.

Assist with audit preparation by gathering supporting documentation, compiling schedules, and providing requested records to internal and external auditors in a timely manner.

Other Duties and Projects

Perform assigned accounting and administrative projects, identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls, and maintain current procedures, documentation, and training materials to support consistency, knowledge sharing, and employee development.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

3+ years of accounting experience with a focus on sales and use tax compliance, multistate tax filings, and tax reporting.

Strong knowledge of sales and use tax regulations, economic nexus requirements, resale certificates, and state tax compliance.

Experience managing property tax filings, fixed asset records, asset reporting, and annual tax return preparation.

Proven ability to administer and maintain business licenses, registrations, and regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.

Familiarity with audit support, including preparing schedules, gathering documentation, and responding to auditor requests.

High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while identifying process improvements and strengthening internal controls.

Preferred technical skills

ERP/accounting software experience (e.g., ViewPoint, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Experience with unclaimed property reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Salary range for this position is $80,000-$85,000 annually.
