About the role
*Level: This is an IC role, without people management. A Senior Expert is equivalent to a Senior Manager role in a individual contributor path.
This is a unique opportunity to be the first dedicated, locally based People & Culture professional for Nubank in the United States. Based in Miami, you will be the senior people partner for our US leadership and teams, building the P&C foundation from the ground up while partnering closely with our global P&C Centers of Excellence, Legal, Risk, and People Operations.
You will operate with exceptional autonomy in a structure that is still being built: setting up US people practices, ensuring compliance with US federal and state employment regulations, and shaping the organization, talent, and culture of a new market for Nubank. This is a high-ownership, high-pace role for someone who enjoys building, wants real executive exposure, and is energized by ambiguity.
You'll be responsible for
- Be the strategic partner to US leadership: act as a trusted advisor to the US executive team, co-creating the people and organizational strategy that will support the business's expansion in the country.
- Build the US P&C foundation: support designing and implementing locally compliant people practices and policies (e.g., handbook, onboarding, leave, benefits, performance, compensation, and offboarding), adapting Nubank's global frameworks to the US context and setting the standard for future scale.
- Own US employment compliance and risk: anticipate federal, state, and local regulatory changes and build proactive compliance frameworks, partnering with Legal, Risk, and external counsel to ensure decisions are legally sound, business-aligned, and consistent across borders.
- Lead org design and workforce planning: diagnose organizational needs and design the operating model, structures, and roles required to scale the US business; translate business plans into hiring, capability, and succession plans.
- Partner on talent acquisition and US market insight: work with Talent Acquisition to define hiring strategies for a new market, bringing a strong read on the US labor market, talent pools, and competitive compensation practices in tech and financial services.
- Drive the full talent cycle: coach leaders on performance management, compensation, leadership development, engagement, and career growth, ensuring Nubank's global cycles work well locally.
- Handle employee relations end-to-end: advise leaders on complex employee relations matters, conduct or oversee investigations, and manage terminations and sensitive cases in line with US law and Nubank's values.
- Lead change and shape culture: lead large-scale change initiatives (new teams, launches, restructures) and embed Nubank's culture in a new location as the team grows.
- Make decisions with data: use people analytics to anticipate risks, inform decisions, and translate insights into clear levers for leaders.
- Coordinate the local ecosystem: work with vendors and partners (e.g., payroll, benefits brokers, PEO/EOR, immigration and employment counsel) and help evolve the local operating model as the presence matures.
- Raise the bar for P&C: share US expertise with the global HRBP community and help shape how Nubank scales people practices in new markets.
We are looking for a person who has
- Extensive experience in HR Business Partnering or broader P&C leadership roles, with substantial experience supporting US-based teams and executives.
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of US employment law and regulations and multi-state employment considerations, plus familiarity with US benefits and leave practices.
- Strong understanding of the US labor market, including talent dynamics and compensation practices in tech and/or financial services.
- Track record in tech or high-growth companies, ideally having supported market entry, a new office or entity setup, or rapid expansion cycles.
- Executive presence: proven ability to act as a trusted advisor to C-level and senior leaders, influence decisions, and challenge the status quo with credibility.
- Experience designing operating models and leading organizational change at scale, from diagnosis to implementation.
- A builder's mindset: comfortable creating structure where there is none, prioritizing in ambiguity, and moving from strategy to hands-on execution.
- Ability to sustain a high workload and fast pace, including collaborating across time zones with teams in Latin America.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, using data to frame business problems and drive fact-based decisions.
- Excellent negotiation, conflict-management, and employee relations skills, with sound judgment on sensitive matters.
- Full professional fluency in English.
Nice to have
- Experience in regulated financial services (banking, fintech, broker-dealers) in the US.
- Experience as the first or sole HR professional in a new country, entity, or office.
- Experience with immigration and global mobility processes (e.g., H-1B, L-1, O-1) and international transfers.
- Portuguese and/or Spanish proficiency.
- SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent certification.
