The posting, in full
Greywright is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the build-out and improvement of propulsion and mechanical systems for high-performance autonomous vessels. You will own the diesel engines, drivetrains, and supporting systems that move the craft, from selection and integration through testing and fielding. With no crew aboard, our propulsion systems must run reliably for long periods, report their own health, and respond to autonomous control. You will bring the deep marine propulsion experience needed to make that happen.

What you'll do
- Lead integration and improvement of marine propulsion systems on our baseline platforms, and selection for new variants, including diesel engines, gearboxes, shafting, propellers, and waterjets.
- Size and match engines and propulsors to hull performance, mission profiles, and speed and endurance targets.
- Design supporting systems: fuel, cooling, exhaust, air intake, lubrication, and engine mounting.
- Integrate engines with electronic control, monitoring, and autonomy systems for uncrewed operation, including remote start, throttle and shift control, and health monitoring.
- Design for reliability, maintainability, and long-endurance operation without onboard crew.
- Lead shock, vibration, and noise analysis of the propulsion train, and work with naval architecture on weight, center of gravity, and signature.
- Work with engine and drivetrain OEMs and suppliers on specifications, integration, and support.
- Plan and lead propulsion testing, from dyno and dockside trials through sea trials, and drive design changes from the data.
- Mentor other mechanical engineers and set design standards for the team.
What you bring
- B.S. in Mechanical, Marine, or Ocean Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including significant hands-on work with marine propulsion systems.
- Deep experience with marine diesel engines: selection, installation, integration, and troubleshooting.
- Strong knowledge of drivetrains and propulsors, including gearboxes, shafting, propellers, and waterjets.
- Experience designing engine support systems such as fuel, cooling, exhaust, and mounting.
- Experience with engine electronic controls and monitoring (e.g., J1939, NMEA 2000).
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, or Creo) and engineering analysis.
- Track record of supporting dockside and sea trials and solving problems in the field.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time when needed.
- This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled data; U.S. person status is required as defined by 22 CFR 120.62.
Nice to have
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or marine engineering license.
- Experience with high-performance planing craft propulsion.
- Experience with hybrid diesel-electric or electric marine propulsion.
- Familiarity with ABS, ABYC, or U.S. Navy machinery standards and shock requirements (e.g., MIL-S-901).
- Experience with propulsion for uncrewed or autonomous vessels.
- Background in propulsion noise and vibration reduction.
- Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Secret or higher security clearance; an active clearance is not required.
- Meaningful early-stage equity.
- Great health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Unlimited vacation.
