Job Description:

Our Opportunity

Chewy is on a mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents, everywhere. From first browse to lifelong loyalty, we design experiences that make caring for pets easier, smarter, and more delightful.

On the Product Design & Research team, we bring that mission to life (and yes, we really love our pets). We’re a collaborative, curious, and craft-driven group of designers, researchers, and builders who believe that great design isn’t just how things look—it’s how trust is built, loyalty is earned, and customers feel genuinely cared for.

We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer – Retail Experience to help shape the future of Chewy's core e-commerce experiences, specifically, Autoship and personalization at Chewy. In this role, you’ll define and evolve the end-to-end experience for one of Chewy’s most important customer programs, making it easier for pet parents to discover the value of Autoship, enroll with confidence, and manage their ongoing needs.

You’ll work across the entire path to purchase, connecting Autoship and personalization experiences into a seamless, intuitive customer journey. You’ll tackle complex, ambiguous problems that span multiple teams and systems, balancing near-term improvements with a longer-term vision for how these experiences evolve.

As a senior individual contributor, you’ll be a strategic design partner to Product, Technology, and business leaders. You’ll establish experience direction, guide teams toward cohesive solutions, and help grow the next generation of designers. You'll also bring your expertise to other high-impact Storefront Retail initiatives as business priorities evolve.

What You’ll Do

  • Shape the future of Autoship and personalization. Define and evolve a cohesive design strategy for the end-to-end Autoship experience, translating customer insights and business priorities into a clear 12–18 month experience direction.
  • Connect the customer journey. Lead design thinking across the path to purchase, from discovery and product consideration through cart, checkout, enrollment, and ongoing Autoship management. Ensure personalization experiences feel intuitive and connected.
  • Solve complex, ambiguous problems. Identify and frame high-impact opportunities, challenge assumptions, and bring clarity to problems without obvious solutions. Balance customer needs, business goals, technical constraints, and operational realities to drive thoughtful decisions.
  • Influence product strategy and drive alignment. Serve as a trusted design partner to Product, Technology, Research, Analytics, and senior business leaders, shaping the future value proposition of Autoship, identifying opportunities for innovation, and influencing product priorities and roadmaps through clear recommendations, thoughtful tradeoffs, and cross-functional alignment.
  • Drive design excellence at scale. Apply exceptional design craft to create intuitive, high-quality experiences while establishing scalable principles, patterns, and standards that guide teams toward consistent execution across Autoship and personalization.
  • Measure and improve customer impact. Use research, experimentation, customer feedback, and business metrics to evaluate experiences and inform improvements to engagement, conversion, retention, and customer loyalty.
  • Elevate the design team. Coach and mentor designers across Storefront Retail, strengthening their problem framing, strategic thinking, design craft, and decision-making. Build reusable frameworks and practices that help teams work more independently and effectively.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in product design, UX design, interaction design, information architecture, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience leading large-scale design initiatives and mentoring designers.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional design craft, complex problem-solving, and meaningful customer and business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience designing interconnected digital experiences across multiple customer journeys, products, or platforms.
  • Mastery of core product design skills, including interaction design, information architecture, visual/UI design, and prototyping.
  • Proven ability to translate ambiguous business and customer challenges into clear experience strategies, actionable design direction, and high-quality solutions.
  • Experience influencing product direction and aligning cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Strong systems thinking, with the ability to create scalable experience frameworks, patterns, and standards across teams.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and storytelling skills, including the ability to explain complex design decisions and tradeoffs to senior leaders.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring designers to improve design quality, strategic thinking, and independent decision-making.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to travel as needed and work from one of Chewy’s local offices.

Bonus (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience designing subscription, recurring purchase, loyalty, or retention-focused experiences at scale.
  • Experience with complex e-commerce customer journeys, including browse, search, product detail, cart, checkout, and post-purchase management.
  • Understanding of personalization and recommendation experiences and how they influence customer discovery, conversion, and engagement.
  • Experience using research, experimentation, and analytics to shape product strategy and measure customer and business impact.
  • Familiarity with evolving design systems, reusable experience patterns, and cross-team design governance.
  • Experience applying modern design tools and AI-enabled workflows to improve design quality, learning, and team effectiveness.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • You’ll help shape the future of Autoship, one of Chewy’s most important customer experiences, with meaningful impact on how pet parents care for their pets.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to influence both the near-term experience and longer-term direction of a complex, high-impact program.
  • You’ll work across teams and disciplines, connecting customer needs, design excellence, and business strategy.
  • You’ll help elevate the broader Storefront Retail design practice through mentorship, collaboration, and high standards for craft.
  • You’ll join a team that values curiosity, kindness, ownership, and thoughtful debate.
  • And yes—pets are very much part of the culture.

The base salary range for this role is $166,000 - $265,000.00.

  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location.
