Registered Nurse (RN) – Inpatient Behavioral Health – Prescott, AZ

If you want inpatient nursing where the work is stabilizing people in crisis and sending them home with a plan, this is that role — three 12-hour shifts a week, days or nights, with eight weeks of preceptor-led training if behavioral health is new to you.

Overview & Highlights:

  • Location: Prescott, Arizona — northern Arizona’s mile-high mountain community, with four mild seasons and the pines, lakes and trails right outside town.
  • Schedule: 12-hour shifts — days, 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m., or nights, 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m. Full-time RNs work three 12-hour shifts per week.
  • Employment: Full-time or part-time, with several openings available across both day and night shifts.
  • Compensation: $80,000 – $100,000 per year, plus additional pay for nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive full-time benefits, including company-paid medical and dental plan options.
  • Experience: New graduates are welcome and receive eight weeks of preceptor-led training.
  • Work Setting: Inpatient behavioral health.
  • On-Site Status: On-site in Prescott, AZ — this is a hands-on bedside role.

Location & Logistics:

  • Work Environment: An inpatient behavioral health unit caring for adults in psychiatric crisis, including people living with serious mental illness.
  • Department or Team: Nursing, working shoulder to shoulder with other nursing staff and the healthcare professionals on the treatment team.
  • Patient-Facing Responsibilities: Direct nursing care, assessment and crisis response for your assigned patients throughout the shift.
  • Coverage Model or Hours: Three 12-hour shifts per week for full-time RNs; part-time schedules are available. Day and night rotations are both open.
  • Travel: None — you work at a single site.
  • On-Call: None. When you hand off at the end of your shift, you are off.
  • Systems / EMR and Reporting Structure: Reviewed during the interview process.

About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life:

You come on shift, take report and get eyes on your patients. Over the next twelve hours you assess, medicate, document and watch for change — the subtle kind, where someone who was settled at 10:00 a.m. is escalating by noon. Behavioral health nursing rewards the nurse who notices early, and most of what you do here is noticing early and acting on it calmly.

The population is adults in acute psychiatric crisis, including individuals living with serious mental illness. Some arrive frightened, some agitated, some barely speaking. You will pass medications and monitor their effect, participate in crisis response when a situation escalates, help keep the milieu safe and therapeutic, and sit with people on the ordinary-looking days that are often the ones that move treatment forward.

You are not doing it alone. You work alongside other nursing staff and the rest of the treatment team, and you have a real voice in the individualized plan for each patient — you are the person on the unit for twelve straight hours, so what you observed is what the plan gets built on. Discharge planning is part of the work too: teaching patients and families what comes next, and handing people off to the next stage of recovery rather than simply out the door.

If behavioral health is new to you, eight weeks of preceptor-led training come with the job. New graduates are genuinely welcome here, and so are experienced nurses moving over from medical-surgical, emergency or another specialty.

Why This Role Stands Out:

  • Three 12-hour shifts a week for full-time RNs — four days off, every week, with a schedule you can plan a life around.
  • Eight weeks of preceptor-led training, which is a real onboarding program rather than a week of shadowing.
  • Day and night shifts are both open, with additional pay for nights, weekends and holidays.
  • No travel and no on-call — the shift ends when you hand off.
  • Nursing judgment carries weight here: your observations over a full twelve hours shape the treatment plan.
  • Several openings means you are joining a team that is being built up, not backfilling a hole alone.
  • Behavioral health care in a smaller community, where the people you help stabilize are your neighbors.

What We're Looking For:

  • An RN who stays calm and thinks clearly when a situation escalates.
  • A compassionate, dependable nurse who shows up for a team and for patients.
  • Someone who communicates well — with patients, with families, and across a treatment team.
  • A nurse who can hold structure and warmth at the same time in a crisis setting.
  • Comfort with 12-hour shifts and with a population that can be unpredictable.
  • New graduates and nurses transitioning into behavioral health from another specialty are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients on admission and throughout the shift, and monitor for changes in condition.
  • Provide direct nursing care consistent with each patient’s individualized plan of care.
  • Administer medications, monitor response and side effects, and document accurately and on time.
  • Participate in crisis response and de-escalation, using trained techniques to keep patients and staff safe.
  • Support a safe, therapeutic environment on the unit throughout your shift.
  • Collaborate with the treatment team on individualized care plans, contributing your own observations.
  • Educate patients and families throughout treatment, in plain language they can use.
  • Support discharge planning so patients leave with a clear next step in their recovery.
  • Document assessments, interventions and patient responses in the clinical record.
  • Escalate clinical concerns promptly to prescribers and nursing leadership.
  • Give and receive thorough shift handoff so nothing is lost between shifts.
  • Follow infection control, medication safety, confidentiality and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Arizona RN license.
  • Ability to obtain an Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • CPR/First Aid and CPI certification — training is provided.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication and organizational skills.
  • Availability for 12-hour day or night shifts on-site in Prescott, AZ.

Preferred Background:

  • Psychiatric or behavioral health nursing experience.
  • Experience in an inpatient or crisis setting.

This Role Is Likely a Fit If You…

  • You value patient-centered care and approach people without judgment.
  • You can respond confidently when a patient’s needs change quickly.
  • You would rather work three long shifts than five short ones.
  • You want to learn behavioral health properly, with a preceptor, instead of being thrown in.
  • You like being the clinician who actually knows the patient because you were there all day.
  • You want your nursing work to be about recovery, not just throughput.

This Role May Not Be a Fit If You…

  • You do not hold a current Arizona RN license, or are not eligible to obtain one.
  • You would not be able to obtain an Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • You are unwilling to complete CPR/First Aid and CPI certification, even with training provided.
  • You are looking for an outpatient or office-hours role — this is inpatient, 12-hour shifts.
  • Nights, weekends or holidays are off the table for you.
  • A population in acute psychiatric crisis is not the patient group you want to work with.

Why Join Us:

We are a community-focused behavioral health team, and inpatient nursing is where a lot of our hardest and best work happens. People come to us at the worst moment of their year. The nurses on this unit are the reason many of them leave steadier than they arrived.

If you are a new graduate, we will teach you this specialty. If you are experienced, we will give you a team that respects what you already know and a schedule that leaves you a life outside work. Either way, you will be doing care that visibly matters in a smaller Arizona community.

Apply today with your most updated resume to be considered. We look forward to meeting you.
